Worth knowing

Key point

September is the best month — clearest skies of the season, sharpest Kullu-to-Lahaul contrast at the pass, and river crossings at their most manageable. Fewer operator batches run in September so book early.

Caution

June river crossings are thigh-deep icy water with active snowmelt. The same crossing that is knee-high at 7 AM is dangerous by 1 PM. June is doable but not a beginner month on this trek.

Tip

July and August have peak wildflowers and most operator batches — but also the most rain and highest river levels. Best for photography, not for the easiest experience.

Important Tips

September is personally recommended over July–August — clearer skies, less rain, river crossings easier, and the Kullu-to-Lahaul landscape contrast is at its absolute sharpest. Chandratal Lake is worth the extension — do not skip it if your operator includes it.
